AMICO is a design for computer applications capable to provide an LCM-model which gets the Logistics Program across to all actors involved. It supports Asset Management Control by informing actors about their role in the logistic process and their contribution to overall system performance.

AMICO enables an LCM-model to be constructed that represents the baseline, actual and what-if information of:

  • The production performances and costs of the actors within the logistics process;
  • The installation performances and cost effectiveness of the installations within the installation block diagrams;
  • The function effectiveness of the technical and operational functions within the functional breakdown structure;
  • The overall system- and cost effectiveness of the whole technical system.

In combination with the web based PDM concept it is capable of linking product data to the system elements.

Basic system modeler requirements

  1. The system modeler should be capable of modeling a complete asset/system;
  2. The operational requirements should be taken as baseline reference/norm;
  3. The logistic products and services should be adjustable at all levels of the system model and in all phases of the life cycle;
  4. The model should provide management information about: cost-/system effectiveness, availability, reliability, capability, life cycle cost and cost per product and actor;
  5. The management information should be related to the asset (technical system) as well as to the logistics process/organization;
  6. The following information should be available per actor: task assignment, resource information allocated for control, production and support;
  7. The system modeler should be applicable as control tool ( comparison of baseline figures with actual figures) as well as support tool for management improvement by facilitating 'what-if' analyses;
  8. The system modeler should be accessible for all logistic actors (on the Intranet) and should be user-friendly.

In accordance with the basic requirements the system modeler 'AMICO' should provide management information on system performances, logistic performances and cost. In line with this it was decided to have the system modeler composed of three different modules: a System Effectiveness Module (SEM), a Logistics Process Module (LPM) and a Cost Data Module (CDM), as illustrated in next figure.

These modules are considered as information and communication vehicles between the LCM-team and all other logistic actors throughout the life cycle of the asset. This conceptual model is based on the philosophy that the whole system, from conception to phase out is invented, created and utilized by actors who have to communicate extensively with each other. For this reason the LPM is considered to be the communication vehicle. The role and performance of each actor should be modeled in this module. The SEM and CDM are seen as typical information vehicles for the LCM-team and all other actors.

The AMICO modules generate and display Figures Of Merit (FOM) which represent the baseline and actual situation of the whole system for management and control. Besides this a feature should be implemented to support what-if analyses.

In order to achieve this the FOM attributes, defined in the entity- and attribute analyses (refer section 4.4), are taken as starting points. On the basis of these FOM attributes it should be possible to compare the programmed baseline figures with the actual- and what-if figures.

AMICO Man Machine Interface

The AMICO Man Machine Interface (MMI) is the software which is designed to build and handle the LCM model. According to the prototyping design approach several group sessions were organized, involving all disciplines concerned, to achieve more detailed user requirements. In this way the MMI design optimization is based on more than ten prototype releases of the application, which were tested and re-modified. The following figures give an impression of the definitive software development specifications.

The figure above shows an MMI view representing the system overview. From this view the attributes of the system, function and installation entities can be displayed by opening a dialog box. A roll bar menu has been added to scroll the Year-Periods. The tool box bar, which is only available for level 1 users, is displayed on the left .By selecting a basic function (e.g. Function D) and clicking on the Installation Diagram tab the Installation Diagram will be shown next.
